If I Wore A Tulip was composed by Jack Mahoney, 1914 and was typical of that pre-war time when frivolity ruled. At one time Duck Baker specialized in shifting ragtime, swing and jazz standards into string-snapping instrumentals. Never ever heard him sing.
My rendition is a bit faster than it need to be and I’m trying to capture that string-snapping attack that Duck had. The chord structure isn’t that complex, however definitely more complex than the blues, which I usually play.
It begins off in C, but the structure of all the chords is continuously changing as the fingers choose variations on the original melody. The result is great deals of half and hybrid chords that are held fleetingly as the music progresses.
This is a fantastic way to improve your guitar-playing – attempt something outside your typical design and improvise with it.
Relax, Jim
I fulfilled you in a garden in an old Kentucky town
The sun was shining down
You wore a gingham dress
I kissed you as I positioned a yellow tulip in your hair
Upon my coat you pinned a rose so uncommon
Time has actually not changed your loveliness
You’re just as sweet to me
I love you yet, I can’t forget the days that used to be
When you wore a tulip, a sweet yellow tulip
And I wore a huge red increased
When you touched me,’t was then Heaven blessed me
What a blessing, no one knows
You made life happy when you called me dearie
‘T was down where the blue turf grows
Your lips were sweeter then julep when you wore that tulip
And I used a huge red rose
When you wore a tulip, a sweet yellow tulip
And I wore a huge red rose
When you touched me,’t was then Paradise blessed me
What a true blessing, nobody understands
You made life cheery when you called me dearie
‘T was down where the blue grass grows
Your lips were sweeter then julep when you wore that tulip
And I used a huge red rose
