Taj Mahal is signed up with by Indian master artists N. Ravikiran and V.M. Bhatt on a choice of tunes that eventually owe more to apparent blues clichés than they do to cross-cultural partnership. Perhaps that’s because almost half of the album’s tunes– including Robert Johnson’s ‘Come on in My Kitchen area,’ ‘Mary Don’t You Weep,’ and ‘Johnny Too Bad’– have actually long been staples of Taj Mahal’s concert catalog. This isn’t to say that the set does not have any moments of inspired improvisation and nuanced playing; there are a couple of circumstances of sparkle. However that appears an awful waste of the skill gathered, unless the listener is searching for nothing more than an unlikely blues exercise. ~ Brian Beatty, AMG
