This is essentially a hot-rodded Jimmy Reed riff. Chicago bluesman Reed played sang, played guitar and harmonica, and composed “Bright Lights, Big City,” “Big Manager Male” and other tunes without which the modern-day bar band would wither and end. He played shuffles and straight-eighth feels in a deceptively easy design that grooved difficult and sold many records. I nicked the harmonization that goes up to the 7th and 9th from the playing of Louisiana guitarist Kenny Neal.
