In her autobiography Lady Sings the Blues [4] Vacation indicated that an argument with her mother over cash resulted in the tune. She stated that during the argument her mother said “God bless the kid that’s got his own.” The anger over the incident led her to utilize that line as the beginning point for a tune, which she exercised in conjunction with Herzog.
In his 1990 book Jazz Singing, Will Friedwald [5] explains the tune as “spiritual and profane,” as it referrals the Bible while showing that religion appears to have no result in making individuals treat each other better
