Robert Johnson Lyrics
” Me And The Devil Blues”
Early this mornin’, when you knocked upon my door
Early this mornin’, ooh, when you knocked upon my door
And I stated, “Hey there, Satan, I believe it’s time to go”
Me and the devil, was walkin’ side by side
Me and the devil, ooh, was walkin’ side by side
And I’m goin’ to beat my lady, till I get satisfied
She say you do not see why, that you will canine me ’round.
( Now, babe, you understand you ain’t doin’ me ideal, put on’ cha).
She state you do not see why, ooh, that you will canine me ’round.
It must-a be that old wicked spirit, so deep down in the ground.
You might bury my body, down by the highway side.
( Baby, I do not care where you bury my body when I’m dead and gone).
You may bury my body, ooh, down by the highway side.
So my old wicked spirit, can capture a Greyhound bus and ride.
Robert Johnson has had huge effect on music and artists that followed him. This particularly considering he was a travelling performer– playing primarily on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances– who worked in a then undervalued style of music, and who passed away young after recording only a handful of tunes. Johnson, though well-traveled and admired in his efficiencies, was little kept in mind in his own time and location; his records even less so. “Terraplane Blues”, in some cases referred to as Johnson’s only hit record, outsold his others but was still just a minor success.
If one had asked black blues fans about Robert Johnson in the first twenty years after his death, composes Elijah Wald, “the response in the vast bulk of cases would have been a puzzled ‘Robert who?'” This lack of acknowledgment encompassed black musicians:.
” As far as the evolution of black music goes, Robert Johnson was an extremely minor figure, and extremely little that happened in the years following his death would have been impacted if he had actually never ever played a note.”.
With the album King of the Delta Blues Singers, a compilation of Johnson’s recordings, Columbia Records introduced his work to a much wider audience– fame and recognition he only got long after his death.
